Both my grandmothers have been gone from my life for over 40 years, but the impact their foods made on my life was strong. My grandparents from both the Serbian and Slovak sides of the family came from Europe in the early 1900s, bringing their knowledge of the foods and traditions along with them.

Cinnamon in the Cupboard - Real or Imposter?

I have a bone to pick about cinnamon. How many of you really know what spice you have in your cupboards? Are you sure it really is cinnamon? We in the U.S. are having the wool pulled over our eyes about cinnamon. What we commonly know in the U.S. as "cinnamon" is actually Cassia (cinnamomum aromaticum). It is a relative of true cinnamon, but not the real thing.

Remember grandma's cooking? The awesome aromas and hearty flavors coming from her kitchen where certainly enticing and the entire family would hang around the kitchen until she finally shouted "Supper's Ready!" Aunts, uncles and cousins would rush the table to get their favorite seat, rush through the blessing just to dig in to the outstanding flavors of grandma's kitchen. As unhealthy as those meals were, we certainly loved them.
